The Department of Symphonic and Opera Conducting
The post-war history of symphonic and opera conducting at the Poznań Academy of Music is linked to a legendary conductor Valerian Berdyaev, whose alumni were Henryk Czyż, Wanda Dubanowicz and Stefan Stuligrosz. At the same time, he worked with Stanislaw Wislocki, whose students included Jerzy Kurczewski. Successive years brought teaching activity of Witold Krzemieński, whose graduates included Zygmunt Rychert, Grzegorz Nowak, Agnieszka Duczmal, as well as Renard Czajkowski and Jerzy Salwarowski, who later worked as teachers.
The Department is currently a research and teaching unit of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Vocal Performance, Music Theory and Artistic Education. It is composed of conductors who, in addition to their artistic activities appreciated abroad, have been heading numerous Polish artistic institutions. The Department is engaged in conducting artistic and research activities in the field of conducting, as well as organizing courses, conferences and events aimed at promoting and developing the art of conducting. The unit also shapes the teaching process of studies in the specialties of symphony conducting and opera conducting. As part of the course, students are offered the opportunity to collaborate with the orchestras of the Poznań Opera, Philharmonic Orchestras of Poznań, Jelenia Góra, and Opole, as well as ensembles composed of students of the Academy. The aim of the studies is to prepare the student comprehensively, theoretically and practically, for conducting activities.
