History of the Institute

The Institute of Artistic Education was established in 2019 as a result of the restructuring of the Poznań Academy of Music in accordance with the Law 2.0 on Higher Education and Science of July 20, 2018. Operating within the structure of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting, Vocal Studies, Music Theory and Artistic Education, it continues the traditions of the Faculty of Choral Conducting, Music Education and Church Music. These traditions date back to the 1920s, when the then State Academy and School of Music had three-year preparatory courses for secondary school music and vocal teachers. Since 1935, a faculty structure was adopted at the State Conservatory of Music in Poznan. The training of music teachers for elementary, secondary and vocational schools was carried out in Faculty VI. After the war, as part of the new organization of the State Conservatory of Music in Poznań, teacher training was carried out in Teacher Training Faculty IV. In 1951/1952, the Faculty changed its name to Teacher-Instructor, and in 1954 it was renamed the Faculty of Music Pedagogy and Conducting of Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles.

The activities of Faculty IV have always been closely related to the current cultural and educational policy of the state. In 1960, the faculty changed its name to the Pedagogical Faculty. Since 1964, in connection with the introduction of the subject of Music Education in general schools, the faculty was known as the Faculty of Music Education. Particularly noteworthy is the figure of Professor Edmund Maćkowiak – choral conductor, composer, teacher, singing activist, great organizer, rector (1967-1971), dean of Faculty IV (1950-1960, 1967-1971), founder and head of the Department of Music Education Issues (1961-1971). The Department became the leading one in the country. Prof. Maćkowiak was the author of numerous articles on the development of the amateur music movement, the training of conductors for the movement and the dissemination of music, a reviewer of many music education programs for the Ministry of Education, and the author of new programs for higher teacher training schools.

Over the following decades, Faculty IV underwent changes in its name and organizational structure: in 1991-1997 it was called the Faculty of Music Education and Eurhythmics; in 1997-2001 – the Faculty of Choral Conducting, Music Education and Eurhythmics; from 2002 to 2018 – the Faculty of Choral Conducting, Music Education and Church Music (with the Section of Church Music established in 1998).
