The Department of Artistic Lutherie
The Department conducts artistic, teaching, and academic activity in artistic lutherie. The unit trains lutherie students in:
- making lutherie stringed and plucked instruments
- making historical instruments
- repair and maintenance of lutherie artwork
- history of lutherie art
- theory and analysis of lutherie artwork
- acoustics.
The main tasks of the Department include:
- initiating research topics and works as well as substantive supervision of research of the Department ’s staff,
- organizing courses and academic conferences,
- organizing lutherie competitions,
- publishing academic materials,
- presenting the artistic and academic achievements of the staff,
- acquiring and purchasing materials and tools for instruments making as well as albums and books for theoretical works on the history and theory of lutherie art,
- collaboration with lutherie centers and music institutions in Poland and abroad.
The Department conducts academic and research work on the history and development of Polish lutherie. The unit has launched a research project in acoustics that concerns the flow of vibrations in materials used to build a particular lutherie instrument.
As part of the research, the Department established collaboration with other research centers in Poland and abroad including the Museum of Musical Instruments in Paris, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznań, and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
Currently, candidates without lutherie background can also apply for admission to the lutherie course. Beginning with the 2021/2022 academic year, Bachelor’s studies in artistic lutherie will be carried out in a four-year course of study.

We are pleased to announce the success of the graduates of the Department of Artistic Lutherie of Poznań Academy of Music at the 15th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Making Competition (May 9-16, 2025):
1st and 2nd Prize and SPECIAL PRIZE for instrument of highest rated violin-making properties | Paweł KUBACKA

6th and 8th Places | Klemens SIATKOWSKI
The Cometition jury assessed 76 violins from 18 countries. Out of 10 instruments advanced to the final, 5 were made by our graduates. The Competition was accompanied by the International Violin-Making Symposium hosted in the Presidential Hall of our Academy (May 16, 2025).
The Competition is organized by the Henryk Wieniawski Society in Poznań.
