Established in 2015, the Department of Jazz Performance and Interpretation (formerly known as the Department of Jazz Instrumental and Vocal Performance) currently operates within the structure of the Institute of Jazz and Stage Music. Its main tasks include initiating and conducting artistic, research, academic and teaching work of the associated pedagogues. One of the most essential elements of its activity is organizating concerts, academic conferences, master classes and open lectures conducted by its members as well as invited artists from Poland and abroad. The Department also collaborates with secondary music education, organizing workshops, methodological courses or providing substantive supervision for pilot subjects in jazz and stage music.

Another significant task of the Department is to integrate the jazz community of Poznań and the Wielkopolska Region by co-creating a wide range of concerts and collaborating with various cultural institutions.

One of the most notable events organized by the Department is the National Academic Conference “Jazz – Contexts, Horizons, Perspectives”, whose main idea is a broad reflection on the essence of jazz music, analysis of performance issues and development of theoretical background. The most attractive artistic events organized by the Department include the cyclical “Jazz at the Academy” concerts, featuring academic teachers and students accompanied by invited artists. Since 2010 we have proudly hosted such eminent jazz musicians as Włodzimierz Nahorny, Wojciech Karolak, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Robert Majewski, Grzegorz Nagórski, Andrzej Jagodziński, and Marek Napiórkowski. During the academic year, the Department also organizes concerts of jazz vocalists, the Academy Big Band, concerts of student ensembles, and concerts of jazz standards. Since 2015, graduation recitals of second-level students have been held under the name “Young Jazz Festival,” offering not only an interesting showcase of the academy but also an attractive concert offer. The idea behind the Department’s artistic activities is to encourage integration and collaboration of students of all specialties: instrumental, jazz vocal and composition with arrangement, resulting in riveting musical projects.

The Department supervises the educational process by creating and updating curricula for majors within the Jazz and Stage Music specialty. Priority is given to innovative teaching solutions, emphasizing the individual development of students, artistic creativity and diversity of activities. Collaboration with foreign institutions and universities also plays an important role. The Department monitors research projects devoted to performance, stylistic and theoretical issues of jazz music and related genres.
